Mistakes Were Made

Posted by auroracitizen on June 7, 2009

The Banner reported in the June 2 edition that Aurora was hiking their developments charges — but not as high as originally thought.

The explanation for the revised fees was explained by Dan Elliott, Director of Finance; “Doing this study was quite a rushed process, there were some errors made.”

Is he serious? A rushed process? Development Charge bylaws are required every 5 years. So Council has known for 5 years when the old bylaw expires and a new one is required.

There is no surprise about this timing. This Council knew the day they were sworn in that a new bylaw was required and the specific date the old bylaw expired. If the process was rushed then it was as a direct result of poor planning.

This is a perfect example of this Council missing the big picture in favour of the absurd issues it feels are important.

This bylaw is possibly one of the most important issues any Council deals with in a term. The impact of this bylaw is significant — it affects growth rates because builders will consider development charges when deciding where to build and it impacts our levels of service because of what is pays for.

So to suggest it was rushed and mistakes made reflects on poor planning either by Council or staff for not alerting Council of the timing.

How much notice do they need so the process doesn’t need to be rushed in 5 more years?

    Well said Walt.

At the end of the day it just doesn't matter to very many people.
Councillor Buck remarked in a previous post that about 12,000 voted in the last election,
about one third of eligible voters. Depending on your degree of optimism this means that either just one third of us care or, and I lean this way more every day, two thirds of us have already figured out what a colossal
waste of time it is to cast a vote in this town. Perhaps the local fishwrappers have also devined that the majority of Aurora's Great Unwashed really do care more about intramural ice fishing scores and historically significant picnic tables then they do about nine Tiny Talent Time elected officials.
    And who could blame them?

Meanwhile, we can count on the Auroran and the Banner to totally ignore what the hell is really going on. Gosh knows, we need more news about slow pitch leagues in Newmarket and "Remember when that car dealership used to be the Timber's place" stories in the Auroran.

I suppose that's what you get for having freebie flyer wrappers as the only local print media.

And compared to Linda Jackson, Ms. Morris I suppose appears quietly competent, except for that math thing, so its doubtful that the silliness that is Aurora council will ever see the light of the Star.

Now if somebody could just sex it up a bit with ticket fixing, land deals, back room money changing hands, and oh, maybe some bed-hopping, and maybe more than a couple hundred people in Aurora who actually give a flying fidoo would start paying attention.

Mabe we could get the SWAT team in to start stirring up stuff, too. They were good for a laugh or two in their day. And lookie, swat.on.ca is still around, too, kinda like an internet museum piece.

Elizabeth Bishenden said, "the Town has retained a lawyer, but can anyone tell on what grounds?"

Who cares… they'll just vote 5-3, pass the vote, and ka-ching – away flies more of our tax dollars.

I think they're unstoppable. It's humiliating, but it's unfortunately true.

Some will remember that during the whole by-election debacle, the Mayor's mantra was "we need to get on with the business of the town", repeated mindlessly by the sycoPHants. Chiefly by Councillor Wilson in his nauseatingly obsequious way.

Yet, in Council meeting after Council meeting, they spend inordinate amounts of time on the most mundane matters. To the point, where it’s 10:00 PM, and they have essentially accomplished nothing.

So, it is not particularly surprising that they have rushed something through.

The arrogant incompetence of this Mayor and her posse is truly stunning.

Slowly, but surely, the chickens are coming home to roost. One only hopes that the damage to the Town of Aurora will not be too extensive.

Sorry… I should have included that I know the Town has retained a lawyer, but can anyone tell on what grounds?

I believe it was an "emergency" meeting.

I looked at the Agenda and at the Minutes. I can't figure out what happened.

    Does anyone know?

Why would this leadership be focused on something as important as development charges? Let's spend all out time on who's saying what about whom? Who CARES!!! Get on with the business of this Town! It's not about YOU!

Did anyone else notice there are minutes from a council meeting held June 3 on the town's website…?

In attendance were Morris, Gaertner, Gallo, Granger and MacEachern. Buck, Collins-Mrakas and McRoberts were absent. Didnt' they know there was a meeting? Or weren't they invited?

The outcome is that they're going to retain a lawyer. What for?
