Integrity Commissioner

Posted by auroracitizen on November 30, 2008

Now that Council has hired their Integrity Commissioner, it will be interesting to watch how they are utilized. There have been a number of accusation made about integrity that would be worthy of consideration.

There has been the refusal to sign the Code of Conduct by Cllr. Buck, and possibly some citizen members. Is it even appropriate to force citizen members to sign? Or the Conflict of Interest accusations around the appointment of Ken Whitehurst? Or even the dismissal of the CAO?

Will the new position be used as a weapon to try to quiet dissenting opinions? Will it be used for a little self-evaluation of their own conduct?

Most importantly, will this third party be able to render third party opinions without having to vet them through Council under the cloak of “In Camera” meetings because of the personnel nature of the issues?

How broad or narrow will the scope be? Remember, they are not full-time. Will they only be used at the discretion of Council, or will citizens have the ability to contact the Commissioner to investigate and report on the behaviours of Council or specific members?

All of these are important questions that need to be answered. Stay tuned, I am sure that activities will shortly start to tell the story.

From what I understand, anything that is brought to the integrity Commissioner that is deemed to be against the code then must go to council in a closed meeting to approve if it is to go public. What a joke! This council ( ie the mayor and here loyal followers) must approve. Do you really think that anything to do with them will be investigated? Let alone anything ever be done about it. Waste of money and another joke for this mayor.

It is disappointing to see that Councillor Buck is taking the brunt of the bad that is happening on this council. This new “Integrity Commissioner” will have his hands full. He should start with the mayor and her appointment of her best friend and member of her election team to a paid position of $120,000.00 per year. Then go to the fact that another best friend is citizen of the year. Then go to her non-elected member of council vs the democratic process of a byelection. The list goes on and on, but do not blame one of the two councillors who do not follow the mayor’s orders or do what she wants them to do.
This is a joke that still has two years to go.

Isn’t it interesting that now all of a sudden the mayor is quoted as saying the new commissioner will be reviewing the code of conduct and providing an education session.

shouldn’t that have happened before they tried to force people to sign it? or at least before they had everyone’s name printed in the public agenda as being “non-compliant” (whatever the heck that means!) or again at least before they spent even more thousands of dollars on lawyers writing opinions on whether someone actually has to sign the thing or not!!!

    what a joke!

Good luck to the first citizen that brings an issue to the “Integrity Commissioner”.
